Lo que siguió a aquella famosa votación casi unánime, con el Credo firmado, los disidentes exiliados y el emperador triunfante, no fue la paz. Fue el primer movimiento de una guerra de cincuenta y seis años marcada por concilios, credos rivales y lealtades imperiales cambiantes. El defensor más obstinado del concilio serÃa enviado al exilio en cinco ocasiones distintas. Una sucesión de emperadores desmantelarÃa activamente las conclusiones de Nicea, mientras que la teologÃa supuestamente derrotada se extenderÃa por todo un continente gracias a misioneros cuya llegada los obispos del concilio jamás habrÃan podido prever.
