La PenÃnsula Ibérica se formó hace unos 300 millones de años y le dieron nombre los griegos mucho después, lo mismo que a Europa, a partir del acrónimo de raÃz ibérica ëuro (Ebr/'EBRO'. El rÃo Έβρου en realidad quiere decir caudaloso. Y, como hay también otro rÃo llamado Έβρου en Grecia (Tracia), este nombre pasó a Europa a través de la diosa hija de Fénix llamada Εὐρώπη, Europa, según el investigador E. Cabrejas. De manera que bro acabó siendo también la moneda europea. En griego la 'ρ' (ro) no es una 'p' sino una 'erre'.
Por la parte oriental y sur de esta penÃnsula, y desde tiempos inmemoriales, han llegado a ella gentes de todas partes, para asentarse en la misma, tales como iberos, celtas, fenicios, cartagineses, griegos, romanos, godos y finalmente musulmanes, que son los que menos se integraron, menos aportaron a este paÃs y más lo desconfiguraron y, por eso, al final hubo que echarlos. Las consecuencias de su larga estancia aquÃ, se sienten en demasÃa todavÃa: La Hispania griega, visigoda, celta, romana, cristiana, etc., ya nunca más volvió a ser como antes. El rompecabezas se recompuso un poco con la llegada de los repobladores del norte: de lenguas latinas, como las españolas, aunque no siempre pero todas fáciles de asimilar al español, costumbres, religión, leyes, literatura, derecho, justicia, vestimenta, hábitos, trato, moral, alimentación, arquitectura, igualdad entre hombres y mujeres o polÃtica.
Todo lo que ya habÃa de sustrato a la marcha de los musulmanes expulsados, fue rápidamente asimilado sin problema alguno y compartido con los habitantes que quedaron y no fueron expulsados a nuestra llegada desde el norte europeo.
En el año 1448 Cocentaina pasó a ser Condado de la mano del rey Alfonso V el Magnánimo que lo creó y se lo asignó a su fiel consejero y capitán, Ximén Pérez de Corella.
CorrÃa el dÃa 19 del mes de abril del año 1520, cuando el icono bizantino (tabla pintada), con una Virgen MarÃa con el sobrenombre de Inmaculada Concepción -que presidÃa la capilla privada situada en el interior del palacio condal de dicha villa- de dicho icono se desprendieron a modo de 'lágrimas' unas gotas de 'sudor'.
El conde no estaba presente en esa misa, andaba de batallas por otras tierras, pero los familiares del mismo y demás personas presentes en la misa, al presenciar el prodigio, rápidamente corrieron la voz por toda la población y se hizo llamar al notario, Sr. Alzamora, para que levantara acta del hecho.
Como los condes titulares de aquel momento, los Corella, decÃan ser descendientes de los reyes de Navarra y alguno de sus descendientes llegaron al cargo de Virreyes en otros lugares, como Perú, y muchos miembros de esta familia tenÃan también buena posición social y buenas relaciones fuera de sus orÃgenes, pronto se consiguió que este acontecimiento llegara más allá incluso de las fronteras de España.
En algunas poblaciones del entorno de esta Villa y Condado se adoptó posteriormente también este icono y su imagen como patrona de sus localidades con el nombre de Mare de Deu del Milacre.
Pero hay más. El mismo Cervantes poseÃa una copia de este icono que en estos momentos está depositada en su Casa-Museo natal, pero que pertenece al Museo de El Prado de Madrid.
