Originalmente de Yakima, Washington, la autora nueva Teresa Bravo-Cortines fue secuestrada de adolescente y llevada a trabajar en campos en Estados Unidos. Después de escapar del hombre que la secuestró, estudió negocios en la universidad. La autora trabajó en seguros hasta que tuvo una convulsión que la hizo pasar un par de semanas en el hospital. Luego recibió la mala noticia de que tenÃa cáncer. Después de eso, se graduó primera de su clase en Le Cordon Bleu y se convirtió en chef.
