La batalla del Somme tuvo una enorme importancia para todos los que participaron en ella, pero sobre todo resultó clave para los británicos, pues fue la primera vez en la guerra que se vieron obligados a asumir la responsabilidad principal de una ofensiva, y lo cierto es que no tuvieron tiempo suficiente para prepararse adecuadamente para el asalto. Pero el aspecto puramente militar no fue el único importante para los británicos: la batalla del Somme permanece viva en la memoria colectiva del pueblo, no solo por la inimaginable devastación y la enorme cantidad de bajas sufridas por el ejército británico en un solo dÃa, sino también por el efecto que produjo sobre el espÃritu nacional británico. Hubo pueblos enteros que perdieron a una generación completa de hombres jóvenes en las orillas del rÃo Somme, y familias destrozadas por los hijos y hermanos que cayeron sobre los embarrados campos de Francia. La batalla del Somme constituyó una inconmensurable tragedia para el pueblo británico.
