Ten-year-old Betts and her sisters, along with her best friend, Jilly, are relishing their freedoms during the summer of 1970. Local neighborhood lore regarding the old high school being built on top of a cemetery site continues to pique their curiosity. Soon, they stumble across something while on the playground, and the girls must keep a closely guarded secret about the old high school. Adding to the mystery, Betts' younger sister suddenly comes up missing, causing her family of eight, along with the town, to band together to search for the inquisitive six-year-old. It is around that time when the old haunted high school gives up one of its secrets. Mysterious neighborhood lore captures the innocence of childhood in this coming-of-age novel. Sounds of Home will interest readers who love mysteries and the freedom of the 1970's. Readers who enjoyed The Sandlot, Stand by Me, and To Kill a Mockingbird will find Sounds of Home on their list of must reads.
