Songs for Sixpence is a captivating children's book written by Josephine Blackstock, which tells the story of John Newberry, the man who revolutionized children's literature in the 18th century. The book takes the reader on a journey through Newberry's life, from his humble beginnings as a farmer's son to his rise as a successful publisher and author. The story is set in 18th century England, where children's books were scarce and often dull. Newberry recognized the need for engaging and entertaining literature for children and set out to create a new genre of books that would capture their imagination. Through his publishing house, Newberry produced a range of books that were both educational and fun, including the popular collection of nursery rhymes, Mother Goose's Melody. The book is beautifully illustrated by Fran Lessac, with vibrant and colorful images that bring the story to life. The language is simple and accessible, making it an ideal read for children aged five and above. Songs for Sixpence is not only a celebration of John Newberry's life and legacy but also a reminder of the enduring power of children's literature. It is a must-read for anyone interested in the history of children's books or simply looking for an engaging and inspiring story to share with their children. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
