We must have lain for ever under the bondage, scourge and lashes of guilty fears, if Christ had not come and feared as he did. Sinners without a Saviour have the fear of devils their just punishment; but believers are by Christ's fears recovered to the fears of angels; so fear God as they do, where perfect love and fear are in a sweet and eternal union. It is only by an understanding in the mystery of Christ, that the fear of the Lord in the gospel-rtvelation of it, and in the faints experience of it, can be comprehended. From Christ's quick understanding in the fear of the Lord, believers come to have their true understanding of it. Col. ii. 2. That your hearts may be comforted, being knit together in love, unto all riches of the full assurance of understanding, to the acknowledgment of the mystery of the Father and of Christ; in whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. The knowledge we now have of God's fear in his children and saints is a mystery of grace and a treasure of wisdom: And the fears of Christ, when he ofier'd up himself, yeild to believers the riches of the full assurance of understanding in this point, unto their everlasting comfort. And thus we have seen how necessary it was to the discharge of Christs. priestly office, that he was of quick understanding in the fear of the Lord. The importance of this grace is manifest to his satisfying for the sins of his elect, bearing and taking away their iniquity, and his making effectual interceflion for them; and as the result of all these, unto his obtaining for them the spirit of filial fear, and and access to God with a child-like revetence and confidence.
