Not illustrated. 1912 Excerpt: ...and holy gooste.5 The second version is by St. Bernard: Est Trinitas creatrix, Pater et Filius et Spiritus sanctus, ex qua cecidit creata trinitas, memoria, ratio et voluntas. Singulae cuj usque tripartitus exstitit casus. Memoria cecidit in tres species cogitationum, affectuosas, onerosas, otiosas. Ratio in triplicem ignorantiam: boni et mali, veri et falsi, commodi et incommodi. Voluntas in concupiscentiam carnis, concupiscentiam oculorum, et ambitionem saeculi. Est trinitas per quam resurgit, scilicet fides, spes, charitas.s6 In Wisdom, the Mights of the soul--Mind, Will, and Understanding--the image of the Trinity, are led through the three steps--suggestion, delectation, and consent (ll. 365-7; 497-9)--into the three chief sins--pride, covetousness, and lechery (ll. 52835; 552-99). Then, following the exhortation of Wisdom, the soul seeks forgiveness through the three steps in penance--contrition, confession, and satisfaction (ll. 977-1068), --and is reformed in faith, hope, and charity (ll. 1122, 1130, and 1137). All the parts of this process, except the first--the three steps leading to sin--are found in the version of the formula from the Myroure; the omitted part is found in the version of St. Bernard, which in turn lacks the three steps in penance, and does not definitely name the three chief sins. The successive elements of the formula will be examined in their proper places in the following discussion. s5 Myroure of Oure Ladye, p. 99. ss Sermones de Diversie, Migne, Pat. hat., tom. 183, col. 669.
