This book explores how home front Americans approached their role as consumers prior to, during, and immediately after World War II, especially as major restrictions were placed on how they shopped and what they purchased during wartime. It demonstrates that most Americans strove to demonstrate their patriotism by following the rules set by the FDR administration, yet many could not resist flouting the regulations whenever possible by engaging in peacetime consumer behavior. Black markets were frequently utilized in communities across the country, and hoarding undeclared canned goods and attempting to obtain rationed foods without using stamps were also common activities.
