Social Control of Sex Expression offers a comprehensive historical and sociological analysis of the mechanisms through which human sexual behavior is regulated by social institutions. Geoffrey May explores the development of legal and moral frameworks that have governed sexual conduct from ancient traditions through the early 20th century. The work examines how religious doctrine, community standards, and legislative actions have intertwined to create a complex system of social control.
By tracing the evolution of these constraints, May provides insight into the shift from ecclesiastical oversight to civil law, illustrating the persistent tension between individual expression and societal order. This study is an invaluable resource for those interested in the history of social norms, the evolution of sexual ethics, and the legal history of interpersonal relationships. Social Control of Sex Expression remains a significant academic contribution to the understanding of how organized society seeks to define and enforce boundaries around human intimacy.
