Three women disappeared.
Each believed they were about to begin a better life.
One expected marriage. Another accepted a promising job offer. The third trusted a woman who seemed determined to help her start over.
None of them were seen again.
In the quiet Italian town of Correggio, Leonarda Cianciulli was known as a respected shopkeeper, devoted mother, and trusted confidante. To those around her, she appeared ordinary-someone neighbours welcomed into their homes and whose advice they valued.
The truth was far more disturbing.
As one disappearance became two, and then three, investigators uncovered a pattern that challenged everything the community believed about the woman they thought they knew. The case would become one of the most extraordinary murder investigations in Italian criminal history, giving rise to headlines, rumours, and a legend that has endured for more than eighty years.
But how much of that legend is actually true?
Drawing on historical records, court documents, contemporary reporting, and modern research, this compelling true-crime investigation separates documented fact from decades of myth. Following the evidence from the first disappearance to the courtroom and beyond, it explores not only the crimes themselves but also the fears, beliefs, and circumstances that shaped one of history's most enigmatic killers.
Inside you'll discover:- The true story behind one of Italy's most infamous murder cases.
- How three ordinary women disappeared without raising immediate suspicion.
- The investigation that uncovered an extraordinary pattern of deception.
- What happened inside the courtroom-and what the evidence actually proved.
- The truth behind the enduring legend of the Soap Maker of Correggio.
- A carefully researched account that separates historical fact from popular myth.
Meticulously researched and compellingly written, The Soap Maker of Correggio goes beyond the sensational headlines to reveal the documented history of a case that continues to fascinate historians, criminologists, and true-crime readers around the world.
