It fires on the third pull, runs for ten seconds, then dies. So you clean the carburetor. Then you buy a new carburetor. Then a plug, a filter, a fuel line, a gas cap. $200 of parts later it still will not start, and the mower only cost $250 in the first place.

- The three tests that find almost every dead engine, spark, fuel and compression, run in the order that rules out the most for the least work.
- A healthy four-stroke cranks 60 to 90 psi. Below about 40 psi, no carburetor on earth will fix it. Learn to read the gauge before you spend another dollar, including the beginner mistake that makes a good engine read 20 to 30 psi low.
- Why a spark plug reads black on one machine and white on another, and what each color tells you to do next.
- Real specification tables: torque in ft-lb and in-lb, spark plug gaps to the thousandth of an inch, armature air gaps, valve clearances, wear limits and fuel mix ratios, taken from manufacturer service documents with the source and the date printed beside every value.
- A symptom index that sends you to the page, not the chapter. Will not start. Starts and dies. No spark. Surging. Smoking. Hard to pull.
- Both cycles in one book. Four-stroke mowers, generators and snowblowers, and two-stroke chainsaws and trimmers, with the differences called out where they actually bite.
