The Smalcald Articles is a book written by Martin Luther, a German theologian and religious reformer who played a significant role in the Protestant Reformation. The book is a collection of articles that were written in 1537 and were intended to serve as a statement of faith for the Lutheran Church. The Smalcald Articles cover a wide range of theological topics, including the nature of God, the doctrine of the Trinity, the role of faith in salvation, and the authority of the Bible. Luther also discusses the sacraments of baptism and the Lord's Supper, and he argues that these sacraments are essential for the spiritual life of the believer. One of the key themes of The Smalcald Articles is the idea that salvation comes through faith in Jesus Christ alone, and that good works cannot earn salvation. Luther also emphasizes the importance of the Bible as the ultimate authority for Christian doctrine, and he argues that the church should be reformed according to the teachings of Scripture.Overall, The Smalcald Articles is a significant work in the history of Christian theology and a key text in the development of the Lutheran Church. It continues to be studied and debated by theologians and scholars today. This hereditary sin is so deep and [horrible] a corruption of nature that no reason can understand it, but it must be [learned and] believed from the revelation of Scriptures, Ps. 51, 5; Rom. 6, 12 ff.; Ex. 33, 3; Gen. 3, 7 ff. Hence, it is nothing but error and blindness in regard to this article what the scholastic doctors have taught. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
