In my first book, * I wrote about pivotal moments about which our memories seem to revolve. But every moment is not a turning point. It's the memorable events, slices of time, that provide depth, texture, feelings, and color. Those stories tend to put the pivotal events into their proper perspective.
What is a slice of time? Consider this: We snap photographs of people and places. It's our mightiest effort to stop time, to freeze the instant. But a photograph has limitations. Thankfully, God has given us the ability to record special memories in our brains. We may add emotion and detail to the memory and send it back to the permanent mental archive. Yet we can do something to improve the collection of special memories stored only in our brains. We can write them down. A slice of time is simply a picture made with words--a description of a small piece of life--a highlight that is better than two-dimensional photographs.
In writing these slices of time, I was really talking to myself--filling in the blanks between turning points--telling stories about life, sometimes with a revelation. Writing about any slice of time is often a surprising adventure. But the final product is not the greatest reward. Joy is found in the journey.
Hopefully, something written here will cause you to travel back to a time when your imagination was free, your heart was full of hope, and life's possibilities seemed limitless. If so, all smiles, laughs, and tears are good. The overarching idea in this book is that with all its ups and downs, highs and lows, and trials of all kinds, life is still pretty great.
So come and read these slices of time. And remember that your life's journey is awesome too because nobody knows it better than you.
