In other words, just when you think you might have figured out where Akers' flow will take you with the sensitive emotions expressed in pieces such as the bittersweet, Overestimated and gentle, The First Appearance, she surprises you with the epic biographical piece on her childhood, The Porch, which takes you deeper than you expected to go. Many of her poems resonated with me in a way few other poets' words have. Interspersed with beautiful photographs which add to the book's reflective atmosphere, this is a work you can enjoy anywhere all at once, or song by song, over and over again.
