His journey, from a childhood scarred by war to a career that bridged medicine, resistance, governance, and tradition, reflects both personal sacrifice and collective strength. To understand Nelson's path is to understand the struggles and triumphs of a nation that fought for dignity and continues to build its future. In 1975, at just five years old, Nelson walked through the burned remains of shops clutching a small can of margarine to survive. By the late 1980s, listening to whispered conversations in Dili, he found clarity of purpose in Xanana Gusmão's call for unity. He resolved that courage and knowledge would be his path of service. The lessons of his childhood-discipline, resilience, and the search for justice-became the foundation of his lifelong commitment to his people.

As a medical student in Bandung during the 1990s, Nelson lived a double life-studying by day and organizing resistance by night. Arrests, interrogations, and threats never broke him; instead, they deepened his resolve to serve both the struggle for independence and the people who suffered most. In 1998, risking his life, he secretly treated FALINTIL's Chief of Staff, Taur Matan Ruak, proving that medicine could be an instrument of resistance, healing both bodies and the spirit of a nation fighting for freedom. After the 1999 referendum, Nelson helped transform survival networks into national governance under UNTAET. Later, as Minister of Health from 2007 to 2012, he walked village roads, listened to displaced families, rebuilt hospitals, and secured training and resources from partners across the world.

Beyond government, Nelson's leadership extended into volunteerism, political advocacy, professional governance, and traditional stewardship. His election as Liurai in 2009 symbolized this commitment. As a traditional leader, he became the moral compass of the Martins and Luomou families, coordinating rituals, mobilizing resources, and preserving unity across generations. Education was another pillar of his journey: his academic career as professor, mentor, and researcher nurtured a generation of Timorese scholars while elevating the nation's voice in global health. His professional work and international consultancy further expanded his impact, bridging local realities with global lessons.

At the heart of Nelson's journey lay family, the anchor that shaped his values and sustained his resilience. Born into the noble lineage of Liurai Eduardo and Joana Martins of Coliate Leotelo, he inherited not only a name but also the duty of safeguarding cultural and moral integrity.
