It is not an island. It is a sandbank, uncovered by the low tide. And when the tide turns and comes back in, fast, it takes the fire, the water-butts, and half the crew with it - and the current sweeps Sinbad away as his ship cuts its cable and claws off the shoal to keep from wrecking, until its sail is a speck, and then nothing at all.

(The sailors who lived told it, ever after, as an island that was a great fish, and woke, and dived. Sinbad was on it. He tells you what it really was.) It is told in Sinbad's own voice - an old and immensely rich man in Baghdad, answering a poor young porter who wants to know why God gives some men so much and others so little, by telling him exactly what the wealth cost.
