As the voice fronting Australian band SPK's alternative hit Metal Dance, Sinan Revell prised open the hearts and minds of the mainstream to industrial culture's ways of feeling, experiencing and navigating the world. The success of that song helped catapult SPK out of the poverty of the 1980s London underground scene to a new life in Los Angeles, where Sinan's then husband Graeme Revell became a successful film soundtrack composer. After raising their two children, Sinan and Graeme separated in the early 2000s, and Sinan went on to publicly reprise her activities as an artist, photographer and performer, while in the process exploring her own roots. Née Sinan Leong, she was born in China but grew up among migrant communities in 1950s and 60s Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia, where her family ran a Chinese cafe. Her autobiography of her childhood and teenage years, when she pitched in alongside her siblings to keep the family cafe up and running once home from school, is by turns affecting and exhilarating, doing for Chinese in Australia what Chinese-American author Maxine Hong Kingston's - The Woman Warrior did for Chinese-American communities in California.
