A Simple Soul is a novella by French author Gustave Flaubert. The story follows the life of a woman named Felicite, who works as a servant for various families throughout her life. Despite her simple and uneducated background, Felicite possesses a deep and pure love for those around her, including her employers and a parrot named Loulou. She experiences joy and heartbreak, and ultimately finds solace in her faith. Through Felicite's story, Flaubert explores themes of love, sacrifice, and the human condition. The novella is known for its vivid descriptions and evocative prose, and is considered a masterpiece of French literature.Like every other woman, she had had an affair of the heart. Her father, who was a mason, was killed by falling from a scaffolding. Then her mother died and her sisters went their different ways; a farmer took her in, and while she was quite small, let her keep cows in the fields. She was clad in miserable rags, beaten for the slightest offence and finally dismissed for a theft of thirty sous which she did not commit. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
