The author Joy Nugent was a pioneer in establishing a private nurse practice in home- based end-of-life care in 1987 in her hometown of Adelaide, South Australia in her midlife. Aspiring to the spiritual need to go within, and to know oneself, she was introduced to the work of psychologist Katherine Briggs who studied the psychological type research of Swiss psychologist Carl Jung. Her daughter, Isabel Briggs-Myers, helped her mother formulate the findings into a well-researched Typology-the Myers Briggs Typology Indicator (MBTI).
This knowledge the author found essential in building rapport with those who were vulnerable and dying. For example:
Extroverts - need a chance to talk and to share.
Introverts - need a chance to reflect and to go within.
Sensates - need facts and a practical application.
Intuitives - need a chance to use imagination.
Thinkers - need a chance to confront and to challenge.
Feelers - need affirmations and to see value.
Judgers - need a plan of action.
Perceivers - need an opportunity to self-pace.
More wisdom from Joy Nugent:
As Good as Goodbyes Get - a window into death and dying, 2014 My Way - one nurse's passion for end-of-life, 2018
Parting the Veil - reflections on soul, 2018.
Your Life - Your Way - practical tips and reflections, 2022.
Live Well to Die Well - looking at all facets of a best possible life, 2023. A Self-Care Portfolio, 2023
The author is the founder and director of a private for-profit company Hunab Ku Pty Ltd. Hunab Ku is a Mayan name for the spiritual goal of oneness. This company owns the copyright of the author's books and supports the charity Soul Talks which Joy founded in 2018 to promote self-healing and to relieve death anxiety. Meaning in life is found when one finds meaning in themselves.
