Simony by William Downes Willis explores the historical and ethical dimensions of simony, the practice of buying or selling ecclesiastical privileges. In two parts, the book delves into the history and effects of this controversial practice. Part one examines the origins and evolution of simony, its impact on the church, and its consequences for religious integrity.
Part two provides an account of the Puritan Feoffees of A.D. 1622 and the Simeon Trustees of A.D. 1836, offering insights into the historical context and the individuals involved in these movements. Willis offers a detailed examination of the efforts to address and counteract simony throughout history, revealing the complexities and challenges of maintaining religious purity and combating corruption within religious institutions.
