Charles was beaten unconscious by his father several times as a child in the family's home for not doing his chores or other duties. After the last beating, Charles packs his belongings and runs away from home. He immediately becomes homeless for six months. Then, he lives with an uncle for a short time and enlists in the military. At this time in his life, he meets positive male and female role models who encourage him to go back to school. Some time later, he earns a master's degree in marriage, family and child therapy. Then, he enrolls in six months of counseling to work through poverty, emotional trauma and violence. Later when Charles becomes an adult, he confronts his father for beating him and his mother for so many years.
