Throughout history, women have undergone a profound transformation both in mythology and in social life. In ancient civilisations, it is possible to find traces of the depiction of woman as a sacred, creative and powerful being in the cult of the Mother Goddess. This power attributed to female figures has gained meaning through their representation of basic elements such as fertility, life and death. Goddesses such as Inanna, Ishtar, Demeter and Cybele were symbolised not only by their divine power, but also by the central role played by women in societies. However, in time, the voices of these goddesses were silenced; they were replaced by masculine god figures and the patriarchal orders established by them.
This book, which you are holding in your hands, has been written to examine how women, a glorified figure throughout history, have been silenced and deprived of power over time. For this reason, starting from the strong representation of women in polytheistic belief systems, it will reveal how they were pushed to the background and how they were socially shaped with the rise of monotheistic religions such as Judaism, Christianity and Islam.
