In America, the first slaves in great numbers were Caucasian, called Indentured Servants. Indentured Servitude began in the U.S. in the 1600s in Virginia when wealthy owners of land paid the passage for Irish and other European laborers to come to America. But terrible strings were attached to these agreements which were generally terms of from three to seven years of free labor. Often, the work was exceptionally strenuous with long hours, and often terrible working and living conditions identical to slavery. During most of the 17th century the Indentured were mostly White English men and women with a few Africans, Irish and Indians-all under indenture contracts but having been promised their freedom. History reveals that according to an 1839 census in South Carolina, 464 free Black slaves owned 2,215 slaves and close to 78% of Black families owned slaves, and Black slaveowners were thought to have owned White slaves bound by such a contract.
