Minna Loftus Allen wrote Show Pekingese in 1923 for exhibitors rather than pet owners, and it shows on every page. Origin and history come first, then the genealogy of the breed, the clubs and their standards of points, the brood bitch and the stud dog, the rearing and feeding of puppies with notes on kennelling, the common ailments, and the whole business of preparing a dog for exhibition.
The breed had come to Britain from the imperial palaces of China and had become, by the 1920s, the most competitive class in the toy ring. This is the handbook of that competition, written from inside it.
