Should a Christian wear a wedding ring? A class ring? Facial makeup? For many believers, jewelry and cosmetics are a touchy subject - one most preachers quietly avoid. In this straightforward, Scripture-driven study, James R. Pence steps into the question without flinching and lets the Bible speak for itself.
Beginning in Ezekiel 28 with the fall of Lucifer - whose God-given beauty and covering of precious stones became the very source of his corruption - Pence traces a single thread through the whole of Scripture. From Jacob's household burying their earrings at Bethel (Genesis 35), to Israel stripping off their ornaments after the golden calf (Exodus 33), to God calling the jewels of the daughters of Zion filth (Isaiah 3), to Jezebel's painted face, to the gold-decked woman of Revelation 17 set against the pure bride of Christ - the pattern is unmistakable. Outward adorning has always been the covering of the carnal and the apostate; God chose instead the hidden man of the heart (1 Peter 3:4) and the incorruptible ornament of a meek and quiet spirit.
Pence builds his case not on legalism but on love. The mature believer never asks, How much can I get away with and still make Heaven? but, How much can I do for the Lord? A closing chapter on historical evidence draws on the early church fathers - including Clement of Alexandria - and traces the wedding ring's roots to Roman paganism adopted by the church in the second century.
