Shorter Novels: Fiction, Volume 2, edited by Philip Henderson, is a significant anthology that brings together pivotal works of English prose from the Jacobean and Restoration periods. This collection serves as a vital bridge between the Elizabethan era and the full emergence of the English novel in the eighteenth century. It features foundational texts that explore themes of adventure, romance, and social intrigue, offering a comprehensive look at the evolution of narrative form.
Included in this volume are notable works such as Oroonoko by Aphra Behn, often cited as one of the earliest English novels to grapple with the complexities of identity and the noble savage trope. The collection also includes Incognita by William Congreve, a witty and sophisticated piece of fiction that highlights the transition toward the comedy of manners. Other inclusions, like Henry Neville's The Isle of Pines and Emanuel Ford's Ornatus and Artesia, demonstrate the diversity of narrative styles and genres prevalent during the seventeenth century.
This volume is an essential resource for students and enthusiasts of English literature, providing access to shorter fictional forms that shaped the trajectory of modern storytelling. Through these varied narratives, readers can examine the evolving tastes and cultural concerns of a transformative era in literary history.
