Religion: people love it, debate it, or hate it. This book isn't really about religion. It may not sound surprising, given my title, I don't personally care for religion but I do care about being right with the God of the Bible. That's why Shattering the Stained Glass Jesus presents the possibility of a more meaningful relationship with God that is based upon the Bible, and not what we think the Bible teaches. Our challenge is that religious systems have contaminated Christ by binding concepts like church, religion, and Jesus so tightly together, we can't distinguish Jesus Christ from another religious system. One symptom of the breakdown is that when religious people fail us, God seems to fail. For example, the apostle Paul strictly followed his Judaic traditions and beliefs as he tried to eradicate the cult of early Christianity. The resurrected Jesus Christ confronted (and temporarily blinded) him. This resulted in a staunch Jewish leader into a zealous Christian; Paul would pen more of the New Testament than any other biblical writer. Paul encouraged independent study of the Bible because he knew how easily wolves would deceive the sheep. Paul commended the Bereans in Acts 17:11 for comparing biblically related beliefs with the scriptures themselves. Many Christian religious systems collaborate with our culture and create caricatures of Christ that distort the biblical Jesus and convert him into someone they want him to be instead of presenting the true, Jesus Christ of the Bible. Envision viewing the living Jesus through stained glass filters that distort and discolor our impressions of the historical, Christ. Many would say they see Jesus clearly but is that true? Within the next few pages, you'll have an opportunity to test how much--or little--your beliefs about the Jesus of the Bible may have drifted from the truth.
