When a small boy named Meekwun slips into the forest feeling alone and overlooked, he discovers something he never expected - a tree that listens, speaks, and knows everything worth knowing.
What begins as an unlikely friendship becomes a lifelong relationship built on empathy, reciprocity, and deep respect for the natural world. As Meekwun grows - from a bullied child into a young man, a husband, a father, and finally an elder - the tree gives generously at every stage. And Meekwun, shaped by everything she has taught him, learns to give back.
Rooted in Indigenous ways of knowing, The Sharing Tree / Meekwun weaves traditional cultural practices - including smudging and the offering of tobacco - naturally into the story, making them accessible to all readers without explanation feeling forced. The tree is more than a character. She is Elder, knowledge keeper, and the land itself.
A story about what we take, what we owe, and what we must pass on.
Written by Winnipeg-born Métis educator and author Sean Thompson, The Sharing Tree / Meekwun is a timeless fable for young readers and the adults who read alongside them - and a meaningful classroom resource for educators working with Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action 62-64.
A 100% Indigenous-owned Uncle Productions title.
