In this exquisitely illustrated storybook, Fay Britton presents William Shakespeare's most famous plays as short stories for young readers.
The author wrote this collection seeking to introduce several of the great English playwright's works in a way that children can understand. Shakespeare wrote some of the best-known and most enduring stories ever put to paper, and remains a titan of English literature, taught in schools all around the world. Hobbyist readers place Shakespeare at or near the top of their essential reading list, and the plays continue to be performed on the theatrical stage.
This collection includes retellings of Shakespeare's tragedies such as Macbeth and King Lear, and comedies like A Midsummer Night's Dream. Twenty-four detailed illustrations are included, helping the reader to visualize the scenes and characters. The most important dialogues are reproduced and simplified in modern English, that readers may follow what is happening.
Fay Britton skillfully marries the style of classic fairy tales to the compelling narrative of the great playwright, in a way sure to appeal to readers starting to show an interest in literature. For parents keen to introduce the plots, concepts and characters of Shakespeare to their young ones, this collection is superb.
