On a Tuesday morning in October 2017, the world changed. Not because of a natural disaster or political upheaval, but because of two words published in The New York Times: Harvey Weinstein. Within hours, those words became a catalyst that would reshape how we think about power, dignity, and safety in workplaces around the globe.
The statistics are stark. According to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, harassment charges filed with federal agencies have remained persistently high for decades, with sexual harassment comprising a significant portion of these complaints. Yet these numbers represent only the visible tip of an iceberg. Research consistently shows that the vast majority of harassment incidents go unreported, creating a shadow economy of silence, accommodation, and lost potential that pervades virtually every industry.
Consider Sarah, a talented engineer at a mid-sized tech company who gradually stopped volunteering for high-visibility projects after her supervisor began making increasingly personal comments about her appearance. Or Marcus, a retail manager who watched his enthusiasm for mentoring junior staff diminish after repeated jokes about his sexuality from district leadership. Or Elena, a healthcare worker who changed departments to avoid a colleague whose harmless flirting made her dread coming to work. Their stories-repeated countless times across offices, factories, hospitals, restaurants, and boardrooms-represent not just individual suffering, but a massive waste of human potential.
The conventional approach to addressing sexual harassment has typically followed a predictable pattern: incident occurs, complaint is filed, investigation ensues, disciplinary action is taken (or not), and everyone hopes the problem has been handled. This reactive model, while sometimes necessary, fundamentally misunderstands the nature of workplace harassment. Sexual harassment isn't simply a series of discrete incidents committed by bad actors that can be managed through punishment. It's a symptom of deeper organizational cultures that tolerate, ignore, or actively enable the abuse of power and the dehumanization of workers.
This book operates from a different premise: that truly addressing sexual harassment requires us to think beyond individual incidents and toward systemic transformation. It requires us to examine not just what happens when harassment occurs, but what conditions make it possible in the first place. What organizational structures concentrate power without accountability? What cultural norms normalize inappropriate behavior? What systems of communication break down when people most need to be heard?
The #MeToo movement, which gained international momentum in the years following that October morning, has fundamentally shifted the conversation around workplace harassment. It has broken through decades of silence, challenged long-standing power structures, and forced organizations to confront uncomfortable truths about their cultures. But movements create moments of possibility-they don't automatically create sustainable change. The question now is whether we can channel this moment of reckoning into lasting transformation.
