In this book, Tanser examines the settlement of African Americans in Kent County, Ontario, in the 19th century and the cultural and social factors that influenced their integration into Canadian society. The book also includes a study of the mental capacity of the descendants of the settlers, based on intelligence tests. Tanser's work sheds light on an overlooked aspect of African American history and contributes to our understanding of multiculturalism in Canada.
