How wilt thou do in the swelling of Jordan?--Jeremiah xii. 5. I Wish to take these words not as an exclamation uttered impassionedly, but as a practical question asked deliberately, ---Have you made up your mind how you will act under certain circumstances? How wilt thou do in the swelling of Jordan? It has become a habit, --and, as it seems to me, without sufficient ground, --to look upon Jordan as always the type of death. Doubtless, that is one of its meanings. But there is no passage of the Bible which justifies its exclusive application to that subject. The crossing of the Israelites through it, as they entered the Holy Land, suggested, of course, that idea. It was confirmed by the incident of Elijah smiting its waters, and passing through them, just before his translation. And the image of the text has lent itself to the association. But the real fact is, that Jordan, in Scripture imagery, has a much wider meaning. It is any great impediment which has to be got over; it is the difficulty which rolls in between the Christian and any of his attainments, on the journey of life. In this place, for instance, it has no direct reference to death. But the thought to be conveyed is, If you have failed in smaller trials, how can you succeed in greater ordeals? If thou hast run with the footmen, (your equals) and they have wearied thee, then how canst thou contend with horses? and if in the land of peace, wherein thou trustedst, they wearied thee, then how wilt thou do in the swelling of Jordan? If you have not been equal to duty in sunny hours, and quiet places, how will it be with you when the streams ...
