A man stands alone in a yard at night and asks aloud why he keeps falling. Something answers him from the ground.
Over four nights, four voices instruct him.
The first tells him that the sea does not grow still because someone holds it, but because it has stopped fighting itself, and that a man who holds himself will fall. The second tells him that a body is a flame united in its colors, and that the man who strikes with his hand alone strikes weakly though his hand is strong. The third comes on the night his hands will not stop shaking, and tells him the thing his teachers were too ashamed to say: that fear is not a defect but the fastest knowing he has, and that the danger is never the fear but the face a man puts on to cover it. And the fourth comes last and says I was first, because every man who walks into a fighting yard walks in through the same gate, the day someone stood over him and he could not stand against them.
