The Sepher Yetzirah, the Book of Formation, is the oldest surviving work of Jewish mysticism and the seed from which every later branch of Kabbalah grew. Its central claim still startles: the twenty-two letters of the Hebrew alphabet and the ten sefirot are not symbols that describe creation. They are the substance creation is made of.
