The stories in this volume focus on the experiences of soldiers and civilians in times of peace and war. The historical settings include Etruria, Rome, World War Two Italy, United States, the 1980s and the early 2000s. The story, Internment, deals with an undocumented Italian-American whom the United States government sends to a War Authority Relocation camp. Yet another War, is about a mother who had protested against war and the military at a young age and whose son is entering the army. Three stories in this volume, A Sweet Respite, The Self-Righteous and the Innocent, and, The Demon and the Peacemaker, regard the experiences of civilians and soldiers in Italian towns during the Second World War.
