I Mr. Chairman And Gentlemen, This interesting branch of the archaeology of costume, is, perhaps, the most difficult and obscure, owing to the fact that it concerns the few rather than the many. The study of military, ecclesiastical, and civil attire, in the middle ages, is comparatively simple, as we find it frequently represented, not only in pictures, but in monuments of stone and brass; nay, further, we have even now specimens of the actual costumes of historical personages. But it is only in representations in brass, in College Chapels, and some few parish churches, that we can find types of the academical costumes of long ago. All official dresses of the present day appear to have had their origin in the secular attire of some period more or less remote.
