Sedevacantism, American Catholicism's only homegrown New Religious Movement (NRM), argues that the Church has sunk into heresy at the hands of false popes. Sedevacantists' estrangement from what they consider the errant post-Vatican Two Church left them in need of a sympathetic bishop. The only Catholic bishop ever to publicly adhere to Sedevacantism was Archbishop Ngo Dinh Thuc. Thuc (1897-1984) was part of Vietnam's notorious political dynasty, the Ngo family. He was a CIA contact, a cunning businessman, and an apologist for his brothers' authoritarian regime. Exiled from Vietnam after the 1963 coup, Thuc became embroiled in a series of bizarre schemes and earned a rare double-excommunication before joining forces with the new hardline movement called Sedevacantism. This book meticulously reconstructs the coming together of an extraordinary partnership - an exiled and disoriented Vietnamese archbishop and a so-called extreme traditionalist network of disaffected American Catholics.
