Buried in a clay jar for sixteen hundred years.
In December of 1945, a farmer digging for soft soil outside the Egyptian town of Nag Hammadi struck something solid. Beneath the ground was a sealed jar, and inside it sat thirteen leather bound books that the early church had spent centuries working to erase from memory.
One text appeared in that collection more often than any other. This is that text.
It tells the story of creation again, and almost nothing in it is familiar.
The god who shapes the material world is not the supreme and perfect being. He is a flawed, ignorant, and jealous lesser power, born from a mistake made far above him, convinced he rules alone because he has never seen what stands over him. The garden is a carefully arranged trap. The forbidden tree is the one true source of awakening. The serpent acts from a corrupted motive and still manages to serve a purpose it never understood.
And buried inside every human being, according to this account, is a spark of something real that the rulers of this world have worked tirelessly and unsuccessfully to keep asleep.
A bishop named Irenaeus attacked this teaching by name in the second century. Copies were destroyed. The communities who read it were declared heretical. It survived only because its keepers hid it, exactly as its own closing lines instructed them to.
