Seasons of Uncertainty is a work of fiction rooted in real histories, real places, and real consequences. While the characters and events in this book are imagined, the world they inhabit is not. The systems that shape Flatsville-the boundaries drawn by race, land, power, and fear-were real, deliberate, and enduring.
This story was written with deep respect for the lives that were constrained by those systems, and for the communities that learned how to survive, love, and endure within them. Much of what appears on the page reflects the quiet violence of everyday life during segregation: the rules that were never written down, the dangers that did not need announcing, and the understanding that safety was never guaranteed.
I chose not to soften the language, the silences, or the consequences. To do so would have been dishonest. At the same time, this book is not meant to sensationalize pain. It is meant to bear witness-to the weight carried by ordinary people, to the ways history settles into land and memory, and to how the past continues to shape the present.
Some readers may recognize echoes of real towns, real families, or real experiences. Others may find unfamiliar terrain. My hope is that Seasons of Uncertainty invites reflection rather than judgment, and understanding rather than distance. This is not a story about heroes or villains alone, but about a community living under pressure, navigating choices where none are easy.
This book was written over many years, across seasons both personal and historical. It stands as an offering-to those whose stories were never recorded, to those who lived within uncertainty, and to those still reckoning with its legacy.
