When Rome curtailed its military support in AD 410, Britain was left exposed. Military authority passed into the hands of regional dynasties, while Saxons, Jutes, Picts and Scotti pressed their attacks. Out of this violent and uncertain world emerged the figure later remembered as King Arthur.
In Searching for Arthur... Finding Arthwys, historian and field researcher Alistair Hall draws on decades of site investigation and detailed analysis of early sources to re-examine Dark Age Britain.
Challenging traditional assumptions about the Battle of Badon and the political geography of sub-Roman Britain, Hall argues that the twelve battles listed in the Historia Brittonum were not scattered events, but part of a rapid and brutal campaign fought against the Jutes and Saxons.
That campaign, Hall argues, was led by Arthwys, a descendant of the Northern Protector Coel Hen. He makes the case that no other named Briton fits the Arthur of the Historia Brittonum as convincingly as Arthwys, whose life aligns with the geography, chronology and political realities of the period.
Grounded in post-Roman history rather than medieval romance, this book offers a realistic, evidence-based account of the origins of the Arthurian legend.
