The fourth Sea Dogs book begins with Rat remorseful because he took the Robin's Egg Ruby and kept it for himself. Older now and lame, he asks his granddaughter, Cheryl, and her friend, the young cat named Bertie, to return the ruby for him. WIth encouragement from Mittens, Solo, and Spike, and transformed by Captain Rollo's magical words, the two set out on what they think will be a pretty simple journey. However, the ruby is being sought by many folks, including Jubal, the prince exiled from Black Dog Village. He plots to recover the ruby and use it to bargain his way back onto the throne. He enlists Cully to spy for him and find the ruby. Queen Jetta, Jubal's sister, also wants to find the ruby so she can return it to its rightful owner, Queen Esmerelda of Canis Poodlia. Doing so would restore order, and lasting peace would reign throughout the Canine Caribbean. However, Miss Kitty, Ginger, and Rico, along with Bertie and Cheryl, help Jetta but run into trouble with Cully, Jubal, and Jubal's sidekick, Ragbone. A startling incident at Black Dog Harbor brings the conflict to a head, and the ruby may be lost forever. Can it be found? Will Queen Esmerelda ever get it back?
