Drawing on original research with Indiana public middle school principals, decades of criminology and social work theory (strain theory, social control theory, differential association), and a close look at the history of compulsory education and truancy law, Gentle-Genitty makes an evidence-based case that: Chronic absenteeism and truancy is rarely a bad kid problem: it is a predictable outcome of weak social bonding, disengaged school climates, and policies built for a homogeneous, middle-class ideal. Discipline systems that rely on suspension and expulsion often deepen the very disengagement they claim to correct.
