Salammbo is set in Carthage after the war fought against Rome in Sicily. Hamilcar Barca's mercenary soldiers celebrate their return with a feast in the gardens of their absent general. Because their pay has not been delivered, drunken celebration quickly turns into destruction and plunder. Salammbo, Hamilcar's daughter and a devotee of the goddess Tanit, appears before the soldiers and condemns their violence. Matho, a Libyan commander, becomes fascinated by her. The Mercenaries leave Carthage for Sicca, where their anger continues to grow. Spendius, a former slave who becomes Matho's adviser, exploits their resentment and urges them to rebel. The soldiers demand their wages, welcome reinforcements from territories controlled by Carthage and begin a war against the Republic. Obsessed with Salammbo, Matho enters the city with Spendius through the aqueduct. They break into the temple of Tanit and steal the zaimph, the sacred veil believed to protect Carthage. Matho then appears before Salammbo wrapped in the holy garment. The sacrilege terrifies the young woman and weakens the people's confidence. Hamilcar returns to Carthage and takes command of the war. He reorganises the city's forces, confronts the Mercenaries and attempts to isolate them from their supplies. Meanwhile, the priest Schahabarim persuades Salammbo to recover the zaimph. She enters Matho's tent, where he returns the veil after an encounter shaped by their attraction and by her religious mission. The conflict becomes increasingly violent. Spendius destroys the aqueduct of Carthage, famine strikes the city and children are sacrificed to Moloch. Hamilcar eventually regains the advantage. The Mercenaries are trapped in the Gorge of the Axe, where starvation is followed by massacre. Spendius is executed, and Matho, the last enemy commander, is delivered to the people.
