The Saint's Tragedy is a play written by Charles Kingsley in 1848. The play is set in the 13th century and tells the story of a young woman named Margaret who is devoted to her faith and becomes a saint. Margaret is pursued by a young nobleman named Earl Godwin, who becomes obsessed with her and eventually rapes her. Margaret becomes pregnant and gives birth to a son, whom she raises as a single mother. Earl Godwin, consumed by guilt, becomes a monk and devotes his life to serving God. Margaret is eventually martyred for her faith by the Roman Emperor, and Earl Godwin is able to redeem himself by defending her honor and dying alongside her. The play explores themes of faith, redemption, and the struggle between earthly desires and spiritual devotion.Lady.
