The Saint's Shield: Finding Daily Protection and Peace with the Medal of St. Benedict is a practical Catholic guide to the St. Benedict Medal, its symbols, Latin inscriptions, prayers, history, blessing, and traditional use as a sacramental associated with spiritual protection. Catholic author and theologian Edward P. Martin explains the St. Benedict Cross, Vade Retro Satana, Crux Sacra Sit Mihi Lux, Benedictine spirituality, and the medal's connection with Catholic spiritual warfare-without treating it as a magical object or charm.
Millions of Catholics wear the St. Benedict Medal. But what does it actually mean?
The medal is filled with crosses, images, mysterious initials, and Latin words centered on faith in Jesus Christ and resistance to evil. Many Catholics wear or display it without realizing how much Christian spirituality is contained within its design.
The Saint's Shield helps readers decode this beloved Catholic sacramental and understand how its message can become part of everyday Christian life.
Inside this Catholic guide, readers will discover:
- St. Benedict of Nursia - Meet the Father of Western Monasticism and explore the Benedictine spirituality associated with the saint whose name the medal bears.
- The Meaning of the St. Benedict Medal - Decode the cross, images, letters, Latin inscriptions, and symbols found on the front and back of the medal.
- Vade Retro Satana - Understand the famous Latin words traditionally translated as Begone, Satan, their place on the medal, and their meaning within Christian resistance to temptation and evil.
- Crux Sacra Sit Mihi Lux - Discover the prayer contained in the medal's initials and why the Cross of Jesus Christ stands at the center of its spirituality.
- The Blessing of the St. Benedict Medal - Learn about the Catholic blessing associated with the medal and why blessing a sacramental is different from treating an object as if it possessed magical power.
- Sacramentals and Spiritual Protection - Understand what Catholic teaching says about blessed medals, sacramentals, prayer, grace, and trust in God's protection.
- Using the Medal in Daily Catholic Life - Explore traditional ways Catholics wear, carry, display, and keep the St. Benedict Medal in their homes while remaining focused on the faith it represents.
- Spiritual Warfare Without Fear - Approach temptation and evil through prayer, conversion, virtue, the Sacraments, and confidence in Christ rather than fascination with darkness.
- Prayers of St. Benedict and for Protection - Pray with traditional Catholic devotions centered on the Cross, resistance to evil, peace, and trust in God.
The power is not in the metal.
The St. Benedict Medal is not a magical shield, amulet, or guarantee that nothing bad will happen. Like other Catholic sacramentals, it points beyond itself.
Its symbols proclaim the Cross of Jesus Christ, rejection of evil, conversion, prayer, and confidence in God's protection.
Understanding that distinction makes the medal more meaningful, not less.
For Catholics seeking to understand the St. Benedict Medal, Vade Retro Satana, Crux Sacra Sit Mihi Lux, the St. Benedict Cross, Benedictine spirituality, Catholic sacramentals, spiritual warfare, prayers for protection, and the blessing and meaning of the medal, The Saint's Shield offers an accessible introduction grounded in a Christ-centered Catholic spiritual life.
Don't merely wear the medal.
Understand its symbols. Pray its words. And let it continually point you toward the victory, peace, and protection found in Jesus Christ.
