SACRED CARGO explores how Christianity crossed borders, languages, and cultures by following many of the same routes that for centuries carried silk, spices, metals, and other goods between East and West. From the Mediterranean to Persia, Central Asia, and China, the history of Christianity can also be understood as a story of movement, connection, and networks.
Long before modern globalization, merchants, travelers, diplomats, and missionaries crossed enormous distances. Trading cities became meeting points where not only commodities circulated, but also ideas, beliefs, languages, and knowledge. In this interconnected world, Christianity discovered new paths for expansion.
This book examines the role of ancient commercial networks in the spread of Christianity, with particular attention to Christian communities that emerged far beyond the regions traditionally associated with the history of the Church. The journey takes readers through Persia, Central Asia, and China, following the connections that allowed a religion born in the Near East to reach far beyond its original borders.
SACRED CARGO also raises a broader question: to what extent do religions spread because of the power of their ideas, and to what extent do they depend on the human networks that carry those ideas across the world?
Through the stories of merchants, missionaries, travelers, and dispersed communities along the great Eurasian trade routes, this book offers a different perspective on the expansion of Christianity. Rather than viewing religious expansion simply as a sequence of conversions, it presents it as a phenomenon deeply connected to commerce, mobility, cultural exchange, and early forms of globalization.
