Russia and Reform is a historical book written by Bernard Pares and published in 1907. The book provides a detailed account of the political and social reforms that took place in Russia during the late 19th and early 20th century. Pares, who was a renowned historian, provides an in-depth analysis of the factors that led to the reforms and the impact they had on Russian society. The book covers the reigns of Tsars Alexander II and III, who initiated the reforms, and Nicholas II, who continued them. Pares discusses the various reforms introduced during this period, including the emancipation of the serfs, the establishment of zemstvos (local councils), the introduction of a new legal system, and the expansion of education.Pares also examines the challenges faced by the reformers, including resistance from conservative elements within the government and society, as well as the growing radical movement that sought to overthrow the monarchy altogether. In addition to the political and social reforms, Pares also discusses the economic changes that took place in Russia during this period. He explores the growth of industry and the emergence of a new class of entrepreneurs, as well as the impact of these changes on the working class.Overall, Russia and Reform is an informative and insightful book that provides a comprehensive overview of a pivotal period in Russian history. It is a valuable resource for anyone interested in the history of Russia, political reform, and social change. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
