When tuberculosis-stricken Rufio leaves his hometown of Chicago in the 1930s, he hopes the fresh air will help heal his illness. He is sent to live in rural Indiana with his Aunt Susannah and her Amish husband, Abel. Alone in a new place with the heavy stigma of his disease, Rufio fears there will be no one of his age to talk to.
