Ruby Deals is a typical 10-year-old girl-or so she is told. She loves art, music, her dance class, and her fourth-grade teacher, Mr. Cravin.
Ruby lives with her Gram, her mom, and her calico cat, Snickers. Ruby's mom gives the best hugs and reads the best bedtime stories. Ruby loves that Mom often falls asleep in her bed after reading because she's so tired from working as a nurse at the local hospital.
Gram makes sure Ruby gets on and off the bus and has popcorn and a root beer waiting for her after school. She checks Ruby's homework, even though it's getting harder for her to remember how to do the tricky math. Ever since Ruby can remember, Gram has been the person waiting for her after school. She's also the first person Ruby goes to with any big news-or any big problem.
Ruby has noticed that the older she gets, the more confusing the world becomes.
It's gotten harder for Gram to give her advice. Maybe it's because she's 67, but Gram doesn't always seem to understand some of the problems Ruby is facing. Mom does a little better; she's only 38. But sometimes Ruby's biggest feelings have faded by the time Mom gets home from her shift at the hospital.
Sometimes Ruby wishes she could go back to being four years old, when her biggest problem was remembering to use the bathroom before leaving on a long car trip.
(She still needs reminders sometimes.)
Ruby is learning to work through challenges one step at a time. When she was little, the solutions to her problems were usually quick and easy. A hug from Gram or Mom, a cup of juice, a nap, or a TV show usually did the trick.
Now, Ruby is realizing that she doesn't always know what will make her feel better.
So she's trying different tips and tricks from the trusted adults in her life. Little by little, she's building up a whole collection of choices she can make when things get hard.
Gram always reminds Ruby that challenges are part of life. They'll keep coming-but Ruby will keep learning how to handle them, too.
And that's exactly what she plans to do.
A Note to the ReaderYou are the boss of this book!
You can read the stories in order, one at a time.
Or you can choose the story that feels closest to what's happening in your own life.
You can reread your favorites. You can skip the ones that sound boring. You get to decide how Ruby handles different situations-and then see how her choices turn out.
You can even read every story and choose The Ending Everyone Knows Is Wrong every single time just to see what happens. (And possibly laugh hysterically.)
As you read, you might want to try some of the things Ruby tries when you face challenges of your own. See how they feel.
Keep what works for you.
Get rid of what doesn't.
Or save a strategy and try it again another day.
Talk to the trusted adults in your life about what you're learning about yourself. They can help you along the way.
And remember: hard feelings don't last forever.
Every time you work through a challenge, you become a little more prepared for whatever life brings next-the happy stuff and the hard stuff.
Feeling your feelings is a superpower. Learning what to do with those feelings can make you stronger than you can even imagine.
Your feelings are normal.
You aren't alone.
And whenever you need her, you'll always have Ruby.
